The processing of legacy waste continues at full swing at the Vairapalayam compost yard in Erode, Tamil Nadu. The bio-mining machine started working in September and till date about 30,000 cubic metres of waste has been reportedly cleared.
Indiscriminate dumping of domestic and industrial waste on the landfills near the Cauvery river has created serious problems in the last few decades. It is hoped that with the Vairapalayam legacy waste being cleared, dumping of waste at the riverside will be curtailed.
The New Indian Express has quoted Erode Corporation Commissioner M Elangovan as saying that by the end of March next year, about 1 lakh cubic metre waste dumped in Cauvery riverside (4 acres) will be fully cleared.
Under the smart city project, the total cost proposed to set up a bio-mine plant is Rs 37.25 crore.
