Fire at wet waste facility in Panaji causes major damage

A major fire at the organic waste management facility in Panaji on Monday has caused severe damage to the facility. Estimated losses of over Rs 50 lakh include damages to machines worth Rs 24 lakh, automatic composting machines, roof shed and several plastic crates that were engulfed by the fire.

Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the Navhind Times reports that sources have not ruled out negligence on the part of the security guard. There is a possibility that a lit match stick or a burning cigarette butt thrown into the garbage triggered the blaze.

Authorities said the fire incident will not hamper wet waste collection and that it will be continued to be treated as usual. The partially treated burnt waste was transported in trucks to other loc“ations.
