Karnataka announces plans to set up WtE plant

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Karnataka Power Corporation (KPCL) are planning to set up a waste-to-energy plant in Mandur. According to the Bangalore Mirror, the Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has ordered KPCL to go ahead with the WtE plant either in Bellary or Mandur.

The newspaper source quoted Sarfaraz Khan, BBMP Joint Commissioner, Solid Waste Management as saying that it will be a thousand tonne plant requiring 20 to 25 acres of land. “We want to set up a bio-methanisation plant where the segregated waste will be processed,” Khan said.

In 2017, this website had reported that there were delays in the Mandur project. Another waste-to-energy plant by the French company 3Waste will soon come up in Chikkanagamangala.

The Karnataka High Court had recently observed that the BBMP has failed to implement the SWM rules of 2000 and 2016 and violated the rights of citizens to live in an environment free of pollution.
