Following the NGT’s July order observing that slow progress was being made in the Brahmapuram Waste to Energy (WtE) plant project, the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has assured the NGT that the plant will be completed with 24 months of the tender approval. The last day for completing tender procedures is October 15 and the government is expected to give its approval for the winning bid a month later.
As the the KPSCB’s report, other activities undertaken by the KSPCB to speed up the implementation of its activities under the SWM Rules 2016 include:
- The tendering process for biomining legacy waste at Brahmapuram is nearing completion. The chosen bidder will begin operations in October and complete the work within nine months.
- Door to door waste collection is being carried out in 90 per cent of households in Kochi. 100 per cent collection will be ensured by November 2020. This waste is being transported to Brahmapuram site.
- 100 percent source segregation will be achieved by November 2020.
- Maradu municipality reported that they are not transferring waste to Brahmapuram, instead decentralised wet waste treatment facilities were being done in the municipality itself.
- C&D wastes were not collected nor mixed with the other wastes collected, transported and treated by the corporation. C&D wastes are reused for filling low-lying areas and filling of basement areas and for construction of pavement tiles and kerb stones.
- The municipalities of Aluva, Angamaly, Kalamassery, Thrikkakara and Thrippunithura have submitted their action taken report and time-bound action plan to bring down the quantity of biodegradable waste to be treated in Brahmapuram.
