Kolkata has inaugurated its first Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant, spanning across 5 acres in New Town with a capacity of 1600 tonnes per day. The facility is being operated by Re Sustainability (ReSL) in partnership with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
India’s C&D waste recycling rate stands at a mere 1%, as per a report by CSE released in August 2022. With this new recycling plant, ReSL aims to be a driving force in the country’s C&D waste management efforts. The plant’s advanced wet technology enables efficient sorting of C&D waste, crushing, washing, and screening to deliver recycled aggregate and pre-cast construction products.
KMC will lead the facility’s engagement with local communities, NGOs, social enterprises, and educational institutes to promote sustainable C&D waste management in the city, reports UNI.
