In Ludhiana, local authorities have started to crackdown on plastic-bag use. 125 kg plastic bags were confiscated by municipal teams during raids at markets in Ludhiana’s Field Ganj, Khud Mohalla, Baba Than Singh Chowk and Chandigarh road. Fines totaling Rs 1 lakh were issued to the defaulters, reports the The Hindustan Times. The drive was held under police presence and several shop-owners downed their shutters, fearing action.

On July 21, mayor Balkar Sandhu had announced a ban on plastic carry bags from August 1, a move protested by local plastic traders and manufacturers, as reported by SolidWasteIndia.
