Mumbaikars are awaiting a response from the civic body regarding a second public hearing for the Deonar Waste to Energy Project. Within the span of a week, 300 citizens had written to the BMC regarding their objections to the project at the landfill. A public hearing on April 27 had seen attendees criticize the move, particularly the manner in which the consultation process was being carried out.

Citizens demanded the suspension of all matters requiring public consultation until such time that normalcy is restored, given the pandemic situation. Public consultations are an essential part of the environmental clearance process under the Centre’s Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006, reports The Hindustan Times.

The residents of areas surrounding the Deonar landfill have objected to the project citing impact on health and the living environment.
