The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) is amending its building rules to regulate the disposal of demolition waste. The Telegraph reports that home owners will have to take the CMC’s permission before demolishing houses and notify it about the amount of waste likely to be generated.

The current practice is to inform the civic body before starting a demolition. Once the rules are amended, a house owner will have to give an undertaking that the demolition will be carried out as per Waste Management Rules. The CMC will hire contractors to carry demolition waste to recycling plants. The idea is to ensure the waste does not reach the dumping ground at Dhapa, which is almost full.
