As part of the ongoing hearings regarding the state’s compliance with waste management standards, the NGT issued an order on October 13 stating that the “admitted gap” in the generation and scientific handling of waste has resulted in damages to the environment and public health for which the government is liable to pay a compensation of Rs 2,900.”

The Karnataka government is required to deposit the Rs 2,900 crore “in a separate ring-fenced account within two months, to be handled as per the chief secretary’s orders and used for restoration efforts preferentially,” reports The Indian Express.
