A joint committee of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) carried out an inspection of the Adyar river in Chennai’s western suburbs only to find that dumping of municipal solid waste continues unabated along the banks of the river.

Over the years, there have been several efforts to clean up the river. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) had also directed the concerned local body to pay 42 lakh as compensation for polluting the water bodies but to no avail. Nor has it taken adequate steps to streamline the water disposal process, the NGT noted.

The NGT has also identified several other violations in SWM Rules 2016 by various local authorities in the area, reports The Times of India.
