The Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands has been warned by the National Green Tribunal that if deficiencies in the management of solid and liquid waste are not fixed within six months, a fine for environmental restoration will be imposed.

The green panel stated that the tribunal was temporarily refraining from levying compensation due to the islands’ peculiar situation.

More action is needed, according to a bench led by NGT Chair Justice A K Goel, to address the gaps in waste management.

“We hope that the UT will take additional measures in the matter by using an innovative strategy and strict monitoring at the appropriate level in light of our interaction with the Chief Secretary ensuring that the gap in the generation and treatment of solid and liquid waste is closed as soon as possible,” the bench said.
