The standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an order to the solid waste management department to conduct an audit of its waste processing units. They want a scientific scrutiny of the garbage processed scientifically every day.
The issue came to light when garbage was being burned at Ambegaon. The civic body’s capacity to process garbage was then questioned. Many of the processing units are not functioning at full capacity, while others have been shut down.
About 2,000 tonnes of garbage is generated within PMC limits every day. For the past 15 years, PMC has been processing 3,000 tonnes of trash daily. And still, the civic body struggles with its disposal.
Dnyaneshwar Molak, head of the solid waste management department, said that his team is working on the orders issued by the standing committee. “We are collecting the details of the processing units. However, it will take some time to gather the information of all the processing units as the data spans 15 years.”
