The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sanctioned the setting up of a waste treatment plant to process used sanitary napkins and diapers at Uruli. The plant will have the capacity to treat 8 metric tonnes of waste per day.
The PMC claims it is the second plant in the world where sanitary napkins and diapers will be processed to create other byproducts. The first such plant is in Italy, PMC officials informed Hindustan Times.
The project will be set up, maintained and operated by Procter and Gamble. The PMC has already allotted the requisite land.
