Following the directive of the High Court (HC) of Bombay at Goa, Goa authorities will begin remediation work of the Sonsoddo dump yard on Thursday. The HC had given a deadline of December 15 for the the process to begin.
The Goa Waste Management Corporation earlier issued a work order to Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd (HWTPL) for the remediation and disposal of unsegregated waste at Sonsoddo. The process is expected to be completed within 24 months (excluding the monsoon months).
The Times of India reports the HC described the Sonsoddo situation as a ‘grave emergency’ and warned that it could pose a severe threat to the environment and health of locals if coordinated efforts were not taken. Less than a week ago, a fire at the legacy dump severely injured a worker. It took three days to bring the fire under control.
