SDMC stops sending waste to Okhla landfill

Although the Okhla landfill had already exhausted its lifespan in 2010, 1,200 out of 3,500 tpd of waste collected in Delhi continued to go to the site, as now reported by the Hindustan Times. Now, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has stopped the dumping of the waste at the site. The waste will from now on be transferred to the Tehkand landfill and the Ghazipur landfill, which are located near the Okhla site. The remediation of the Okhla landfill is expected to be completed within 18 months. The SDMC is also planning to insert pipes for the collection of leachate and methane gas as well as to build a Waste-to-Energy plant at the site.
