The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to curtail the size of its upcoming engineered landfill at Tehkhand near Okhla, to 24 acres, instead of the 27.34 acres planned earlier.

An area of 7.34 acres of land was identified for the project. Since it was deemed a forest area, the civic body could not get the environment ministry’s approval. To speed up the completion of the engineered landfill site , the civic body has decided to move ahead without the environmental clearance for that portion of land. An additional 4 acres will be taken from a nearby land parcel, according to The Hindustan Times.

The new engineered landfill will have a life span of 12 years, and it will be made operational in 18 months, as per media reports.
