The South Delhi Municipal Corporation is reportedly exploring the use of inert material, produced during biomining of legacy waste at the Okhla landfill site, in the construction of roads and highways. The usage and durability will be checked by the authorities before implementing its plan.

SDMC commissioner Gyanesh Bharti informed news agency PTI that the civic body had numerous meetings with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on this matter.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation had also announced in March this year that it would use inert material in construction of a 800-metre stretch of a service road in Kalyanpuri near Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The SDMC has also set a target to stop dumping of waste at the Okhla Landfill site by June 2022 and scientifically close the landfill by the end of 2023. It has engaged 13 companies to transport and utilise inert material so that its disposal can be expedited, reports Outlook.
