The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on South Goa’s Rural Development Agency (RDA) and a penalty of Rs 25,000 on the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) for violating Solid waste management Rules 2016 during an event organised by the latter.

MMC’s action follows an inspection that revealed large volumes of unsegregated waste generated from the recent Saras exhibition organised by RDA that lay dumped at the venue, and plastic waste being burnt in the open at the end of the 10-day event held at the SGPDA’s land.

In his directions issued to the RDA South Goa district director, the MMC highlighted that dumping of waste in an unsegregated manner has created problems and that it was prohibited under the SWM Rules 2016, as well as Goa’s bio- non-degradable Garbage Control Act 1998 and liable for penalty.
