Delhi municipalities want to fix landfill mess

Three municipalities of New Delhi – North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations – have set targets to treat the waste piled up in their landfills. From bio-mining of legacy waste to setting up of waste-to-energy plants, the three civic bodies in the national capital are striving to flatten and shut landfill sites, which have turned into huge garbage mountains.

NDMC has set a target of June 2022 to shut landfill sites in their jurisdictions (Bhalswa and Rani Khera landfills), while SDMC has set a deadline of December 2023 (Okhla landfill) and EDMC aims to shut down its landfill site (Ghazipur landfill) on December 2024, according to news agency PTI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech on the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 last week, had said that “mountain of garbage” at Ghazipur in the national capital should be removed. Some of the municipalities have also tied up with some government and private organisations for waste segregation and processing.
