Thiruvananthapuram WtE plant to come up within city limits

Thiruvananthapuram authorities have decided to set up a centralized waste treatment plant within corporation limits, following a show-cause notice from the Pollution Control Board (PCB).

Since the closure of the Vilappilsala plant last year following protests by locals, authorities have resisted the idea of setting up another WtE within city limits and various other locations, including Peringamala, were being considered.

There have be local protests to the idea of a centralized WtE facility in the city. Following the PCB’s show-cause notice, local authorities are under immense pressure to fix the city’s waste management system. The Times of India reports that ward councillors will now be asked to make a list of possible locations within Corporation limits for setting up a new plant.
