Update on Brahmapuram WtE project

The proposed Kochi Waste-to-Energy plant in Brahmapuram has been criticised by the state-level monitoring committee on the Kerala Conservation of Paddy and Wetland Act. The committee stated that the plant will cause “disastrous ecological consequences” due to the planned reclamation of the paddy field in Puthenkurishu village for setting up the facility. As reported by The Hindu, the two-member panel recommendation on the 6.3850 ha of land required for the plant did not go in favour of the Kochi project. However, the committee recommended selection of an alternative site for the project, as it is considered to be very important. As reported earlier, the 10 MW WtE plant was proposed by the Kochi Corporation with GJ Eco Power Private Limited selected to construct and operate the plant in a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-and-Transfer mode.
