The Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has launched a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at Bhawania Pokhri, Belupur.

The facility has been started in Public Private Partnership mode with Tetra Pak, GIZ and TERI as part of the Development and Management of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in India. The Times of India reports that the new MRF will function as a waste sorting centre where plastic, mixed-waste paper and paper-based cartons will be separate and baled. While the MRF will focus on dry waste, the location has been chosen strategically as the compound also hosts a VMC biogas plant to process the wet waste collected and turn it into electricity.
