Waste generation rose significantly this Diwali

Initial data shows waste volumes rose significantly in comparison with the last few years during Diwali week.

In Nagpur, the daily volume of garbage increased by almost 200MT, as per SWM department officials. On the day before Diwali, it crossed 1,350MT – almost 200MT more than the usual per day average of 1,150 MT.

The Greater Chennai Corporation collected firecracker waste amounting to 138.21 metric tonnes on Friday. The waste generated by the city dwellers was 40 tonnes more than last year. The civic body said the sanitation workers collected 138.21 metric tonnes of firecracker waste till 12 pm on Friday. This is reportedly highest volume of Diwali waste generated by Chennai in the last five years.

Last year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, many citizens refrained from bursting firecrackers. This year, however, the use of firecrackers increased this year, authorities explain.
