The Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) has decided to make separate compartments for dry, wet and biomedical waste in its garbage collection vans as part of its effort to segregate waste at the collection point.

Separate compartments for dry and wet waste have already been installed in garbage vans and boxes for biomedical waste will be added soon. The DMC believes this will help reduce the risk of health hazards from bio-medical waste generated by hospitals and clinics which can potentially contaminate other types of waste.

The Times of India reports that the DMC is also looking to construct a biomedical waste plant in the city. The entire Garhwal region currently has only one biomedical waste plant in Roorkee.
