According to a media report by Live Mint, 24 WtE plants with a combined generation capacity of 233 MW are currently under construction in India, while five other projects with a capacity of 79 MW were said to have already been tendered. India’s current WtE generation capacity was stated to be 53 MW. As estimated by India’s Urban Development Ministry, INR 650 billion (USD 9.7 billion) will be invested in waste management, urban sanitation and the WtE sector in the country within the next three years. India’s government has recently introduced a revised tariff policy requiring utilities to buy all electricity generated by WtE plants in their respective states at rates set by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).
