The Bhopal civic body has imposed a penalty of Rs 25 lakh on the private agency responsible for waste disposal after a fire broke out at the Adampur Chhawani waste dump site on Saturday. The private agency was penalized for its negligence and unsatisfactory waste management and execution. Although the fire has been extinguished, fumes are expected to continue to pollute the air in the coming weeks.

The penalty notice cited the private company’s violation of the contract terms. According to reports, a show cause notice was issued to the company almost two weeks before the fire regarding unsatisfactory work, but they did not respond or rectify the situation. As per the order, 750 tonnes of solid waste was to be disposed of at the rate of Rs 333 per tonne.
