The Indian Government plans to intensify efforts in municipal solid waste management, Daily Kashmir Images reports. The Niti Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India ) has drawn a broader framework with a three-year action agenda (2017-18 to 2019-20) aimed at addressing the issue of municipal solid waste (MSW). A two-way approach is suggested for management of the country´s waste. Large municipalities will make use of waste-to-energy incinerators while small towns and semi-urban areas shall focus on composting. With the current waste generation at 170,000 tons/day, this waste solution is believed to help the country in generating 330 megawatts of electricity by 2018 and 511 megawatts by 2019. While proposing incineration as a solution, costly options such as thermal pyrolysis and plasma gasification technologies were also assessed by Niti Aayog. The proposed Niti Aayog action agenda represents suggestions subjected to states’ response.
