The Indian Ministry of Power (MoP) has announced a co-firing mandate. Coal-based thermal power generation utilities are obligated to incorporate 5% of biomass pellets from agricultural waste into their power generation annually.

Compliance should be mandatory after 1 year, and after 2 years, the share will increase to 7%. Utilities with units under reserve shutdown or not dispatched must increase the share of co-firing in their operational units up to 10 %.

The policy aims for clarity and consistency in tariff determination and facilitate the integration of biomass into the energy mix.
