New rules to manage demolition waste in Kolkata

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is set to amend its building rules to better manage demolition waste to curb pollution. Earlier, there were no pollution related restrictions and anyone applying for demolition of a building could just intimate authorities about its scheduled date.

The Times of India reports that the following measures will have to be taken by anyone demolishing a building henceforth:

  • Demolition waste cannot me mixed with other solid waste
  • Concrete steel, bricks, mortar and plastic waste will have to be segregated
  • Demolition waste will have to be kept on the premises
  • An architect or licensed building surveyor will have to give an undertaking that all pollution norms will be followed

According to the new KMC building rules, those applying for bulk waste generation will need to submit a waste management plan to the buildings and SWM departments.
