Over a week after a major fire incident at the Bandhwari landfill in Gurugram, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has said there appear to be serious lapses and continued failure on the part of the Haryana government to provide a clean environment and uphold the rule of law in the state.

The tribunal has constituted a three-member committee to submit a report on the causes of fire at the landfill. In addition, the committee should examine the reasons why unauthorised persons are working at the landfill site, progress on remediation and setting up of the waste processing plant at the site, reports The Times of India.

On July 11, a fire at Bandhwari landfill took two days to be extinguished, aided by 12 fire tenders. Members of city-based environmental groups protested over the incident, calling it a mismanagement of waste and filed a plea in the NGT.
