PPCB fines Ludhiana civic body

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has levied an environment compensation worth Rs 35.26 crores on Ludhiana’s local bodies department for violating solid waste management guidelines and failing to start bioremediation of legacy garbage.

Out of this, Rs 20.35 crore is for solid waste management and Rs 14.91 crore for bioremediation of legacy waste.

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has been fined Rs 2.2 crore as environmental compensation, following a direction from the National Green Tribunal.

This compensation is for the period between April 1, 2021, through February 28, 2022.

Apart from Ludhiana municipal corporation, an environment compensation of Rs 22 lakh each has been imposed on cities including Macchiwara, Payal, and Mullanpur Dakha, reports The Times of India.
